What Products are Available to Treat Snoring?

Treatment is based on the fact that passages in the back of the throat, mouth and nose are relaxed and obstruct airflow into the lungs.

The following options can be considered for treatment. However, thought must first be given to check that there are no underlying problems and no history of treatment.

Self-help

The following self-help techniques may help breathing during sleeping:
  • Sleeping on the side
  • Avoiding alcohol and certain medication before bed
  • Sleeping propped up to prevent the lower jaw from compressing the air passages
  • Loose weight

Dilators and Sprays:

Plaster Dilator Strip

This is an adhesive strip that is stuck across the nose. Within the adhesive strip is a flat band of plastic, which gently helps dilate the nostrils while asleep to ease breathing. Strips come in various colours and sizes.

Moulded Nasal Dilator

This is a moulded piece of springy plastic designed to bend around & fit into each nostril, keeping the nostrils dilated and reducing the need to breathe through the mouth.

Throat Spray for snoring

These are sprayed into the back of the mouth before going to sleep. The spray coats the soft tissue of the airway, reducing its vibration as air passes over it while breathing at night.

Orthodontic prosthesis

These devices are small plastic splints that look similar to gum shields. They are sometimes called mandibular advancement splints and they are designed to wear in the mouth at night and hold the lower jaw slightly forward.

This reduces the risk of the airway narrowing, which causes the vibration of the soft tissue and the sound of snoring. If a snorer has a normal bite and healthy teeth and gums, then a prosthesis or mandibular advancer may provide very satisfactory results.

Boil and Bite splints

These are made of soft plastic that is softened by placing in hot water; the snorer then bites into the mouthpiece, moulding it to the jaw. Many people find it best to try a cheap boil-and-bite mandibular advancer to see if it works for them, before buying a more expensive, yet better fitting and more comfortable, custom-made mouthpiece.

Custom-Made Mandibular Advancements Splints

These are created by taking impressions of the teeth using special plastic moulds. The resulting impressions are then dispatched to technicians who make the bespoke device and dispatch it back to the customer.

The price of custom-made splints varies depending on the degree of lateral movement of the jaw, the adjustability and comfort they provide.

Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA)

Severe snoring can also be a symptom of a condition called Obstructive Sleep Apnoea (OSA). OSA is where someone stops breathing during sleep and wakes up intermittently. It makes the person lose sleep and they are constantly tired. OSA needs to be treated by the GP.
