Everyday Aches & Pains

We all get aches and pains at times – from Fresher's' Week hangovers to something more serious. Pain can be a warning sign, so if you experience severe unexplainable symptoms, it is important to seek advice from a healthcare professional. We can help you manage everything from a niggling headache to chronic back pain.

Tension headaches

Tension headaches affect 3% of the population on any given day and generally feel as if a band is tightening around the head, neck and shoulders. They are sometimes linked to muscle tension caused by stress or poor posture. Painkillers can help the occasional headache but it is a good idea to speak to your doctor.

Top Tips to Avoid Headaches:
  • Drink loads of water (the recommended amount of water per day is approximately 2.5 litres)
  • Eat a healthy diet
  • Watch your stress levels

Migraines

Migraine is a particularly painful, throbbing headache. It is often accompanied by nausea, vomiting and sensitivity to bright lights or noise. A migraine headache needs to be tackled as soon as the attack starts. Some people can reduce the frequency by identifying their personal triggers - ranging from diet to fatigue, weather conditions, the menstrual cycle and even exams.

Treating & managing pain

General pain management often involves the use of painkillers such as paracetamol and ibuprofen can help keep some types of pain under control. Ibuprofen is one of many drugs that are anti-inflammatory as well as pain relieving. If you cannot take these painkillers, then a pain-relieving skin gel may provide focused relief.
