Bedwetting health advice - How to stop your child wetting the bed

Bedwetting affects 10% of all 4 to 15 year olds. It is more common in boys than girls and can be a genetic problem. The experience can be distressing for both you and your child, but the problem is no one's fault. 
Always be optimistic and reassure your child that they are not alone. At school there will be plenty of other children going through the same thing. Just remember that your child will almost certainly grow out of it.

How do you stop your child wetting the bed? 

  • Encourage your child not to have anything to drink 2 hours before bedtime, particularly caffeinated drinks such as cola, as caffeine encourages the body to produce more urine
  • Make sure they go to the toilet before they go to bed and that they can get to the toilet easily if they wake up in the night 
  • Use waterproof covers on your child's mattress and duvet, and absorbent, quilted sheets. After a bedwetting, use cold water or mild bleach to rinse your child's bedding and nightclothes and then wash them as usual
